Ok, so you have been invited to a friend’s house for a casual weekend get-together. You send the polite, obligatory text asking, “What can I bring?”

The host replies instantly: “Just yourself! Don’t bring anything.”

It sounds simple enough, but do you actually listen? If you do, you are officially in the minority.

According to a new study of over 1,000 adults looking into modern socialising habits , the instruction to arrive empty-handed is a secret social test. The research reveals that a massive 85 percent of guests completely ignore the “don’t bring anything” rule. If you take your host at their word, you join the brave 15 percent who genuinely arrive with nothing but their own company.

This study was conducted by Pureprofile on behalf of Smith’s Chips from 7th to 13th July 2026, surveying a nationally representative sample of over 1,013 Australians aged 18+ years.

Why do we have such trust issues with our hosts? For 33 percent of guests, it comes down to pure panic. They admit to bringing an item specifically because they cannot stand the thought of being the only person who did not contribute.

Another 30 percent will quietly pick up something casual on the way, like a beverage or a bag of potato chips. Meanwhile, 23 percent will completely disregard the host’s request and bring a homemade dish to impress the group.

Interestingly, younger generations are the most suspicious of the empty-handed arrival. An overwhelming 91 percent of Generation Z guests will bring an item anyway, often baking or cooking something special for their friends.

The rules of entertaining at home might be becoming more relaxed, but the fear of being a bad guest remains. So, the next time a host tells you to just bring yourself, you have a choice to make. Do you follow the rules, or do you follow the crowd?
