If you have strolled down the frozen section lately hoping to grab a tub of Sara Lee ice cream, you might have noticed an empty spot. In a move that caught sweet-tooth shoppers off guard, both Coles and Woolworths have removed the brand’s one-litre tubs from their freezer aisles.

The brand confirmed the delisting, explaining that the supermarket giants will no longer stock the range. While the change might feel sudden for Coles shoppers, Woolworths actually phased the tubs out roughly two years ago.

Where Did It Go?

The good news: the ice cream has not vanished from the planet entirely.

The brand took to social media to clear things up: “Your favourite Sara Lee ice cream is now exclusively available at selected independent retailers! While you won’t find us in Coles anymore, you can still get your hands on our deliciously creamy flavours at participating independent stores.

So, why the sudden squeeze? Over the past couple of years, the major chains have steadily expanded their own private-label ice cream selections. By offering comparable flavours at noticeably lower price points, generic store brands have taken over prime real estate in the freezer bins.”

If you are craving that specific French Vanilla or Hokey Pokey hit, you will need to plan a detour to your local independent grocer.
