It has been over a decade since we last had the chance to play god with our friends’ digital doppelgängers, but the wait is officially over. Nintendo’s latest Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream Direct just pulled back the curtain on a sequel that looks every bit as quirky, unpredictable, and slightly unhinged as the 3DS original.

We don’t have long to wait either as the game launches globally on the 16 April 2026. Whether you’re still rocking the original Nintendo Switch or you’ve upgraded to the Nintendo Switch 2, you’ll be able to dive straight into the island madness from day one.

More Personalities, More Drama

The core of Tomodachi Life has always been the Miis, and Living the Dream is leaning hard into the customisation. Not limited to picking a hairstyle and hoping for the best anymore. The new Mii Maker includes expanded facial features, robust face paint options, and even new parts that let you get truly creative.

But the real “cheeky” fun starts with the personalities. You can now fine-tune your Miis’ voices, energy levels, and “quirkiness.” Want a Mii that speaks in a high-pitched whisper and tosses and turns in their sleep? You can do that. You can even gift them specific phrases and poses to ensure they are exactly as eccentric as their real-world counterparts.

From Roommates to Island Designers

The living situation has received a major upgrade. No longer confined to solitary apartment living, up to eight Miis can now live together as roommates. If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if you put your primary school teacher, a K-pop idol, and a literal alien in one house, now is your chance to find out. Expect plenty of “unexpected dramas” to unfold in the kitchen.

The island itself is no longer a static background. With the new Quik Build and Island Design Centre, you can:

  • Terraform: Expand your land or move buildings around to suit your aesthetic.
  • Decorate: Place trees, vending machines, and bouncy playground rides.
  • Customise: Use the Palette House to design everything from custom drinks and pets to the exterior of your Miis’ houses.

The Daily Grind (The Good Kind)

In a move that’ll feel familiar to Animal Crossing fans, time on the island moves in sync with the real world. You’ll want to drop in daily to check the News Station for the latest island gossip or hit up the Marketplace for daily deals that change based on the hour.

jump in to help a Mii bond over a mutual love of horror films at the Supermarket or design a “fairy forest” bedroom at the Renovation Centre, this game looks set to be the perfect “check-in” experience for those of us who enjoy a bit of digital meddling.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is available for pre-purchase now on the Nintendo eShop.
