It has been 20 years since Pixar introduced us to Lightning McQueen, Mater, Sally and the rest of the Radiator Springs crew, and now Cars is racing back into cinemas to celebrate its massive anniversary.

The original 2006 animated classic will return to the big screen from September 4, giving fans the chance to experience the movie all over again exactly where it belongs: with a giant screen and plenty of popcorn.

Life Is A Highway

For anyone who grew up with Cars, this is basically a nostalgia overload.

The movie follows hotshot rookie Lightning McQueen as he finds himself stranded in the sleepy town of Radiator Springs while travelling to California for the Piston Cup.

What starts as an unwanted detour quickly becomes a lesson in friendship, family and slowing down to actually enjoy the journey.

The cinema comeback is also perfectly timed with Lightning McQueen Day on September 5, a cheeky celebration based on his iconic racing number, 95.

In Australia, Cars will be hitting the big screen for special anniversary screenings, with Event Cinemas listing sessions across the country on Saturday September 5 and Sunday September 6.
