James Van Der Beek is currently going through an ongoing battle with colon cancer and has shared an update of his journey so far. Sharing that his children have taken on roles of caretakers for him since he revealed his initial diagnosis back in November. In a recent interview with People, Van Der Beek shared:

“I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it, with the support of my incredible family,… There’s reason for optimism, and I’m feeling good… I’m far from an expert, but our approach was just to be as honest as possible, as honest to the degree of their understanding,… They know. They can sense that Dad’s having a tough day. They know if Dad’s in pain,… By not telling them, I think you’re confusing them even more…. Allow yourself to be surprised by their resiliency,… When you tell them what you’re doing, and you tell them the approach, they can see it, and they can feel it. And I think it’s also that your journey is their journey.”

He went on to share that being on treatment has drained him of his ability to be a helpful father to his children and wife, feeling as though this had robbed him of being a provider. Van Der Beek shared that his children have instead stepped in to look after him, with his children offering him assistance whenever he needs it. Even though he’s been experiencing many highs and lows with how he’s been feeling going through treatment, Van Der Beek pushes that he is indeed currently “feeling great and is optimistic of the things to come.
