Mortal Kombat revived its cinematic franchise back in 2021 with an outing that received a fairly good reception. The film itself was far from perfect, in fact a lot of it was indeed outright bad. But it had that classic 90’s action film vibe that made elements enter a “so bad it’s good” territory. Even amongst the games fans the movie was a mixed bag in terms of content but overall many enjoyed the final product. So when it was announced that a second film was in production, for the most part many of us were delighted and excited to see what was next on the horizon for earth realm. But when it was announced that Mortal Kombat II would introduce fan favourites such as Shao Kahn, Kitana, and the one and only Johnny Cage, fans uproar in excitement grew louder. Karl Urban takes centre stage in the newest Mortal Kombat film as the loveable loser Johnny Cage. The film is also set to feature returning characters including; Liu Kang, Sonya Blade, Sub-Zero and Scorpion and many more.
One notable absence though is Cole Young, the main protagonist from the first film. Cole, unlike his accompanying characters was an original character created for the first film. Many fans of the games complained that after waiting years for a modern faithful Mortal Kombat adaptation that it was strange for the film to focus on a completely unknown and new character when the franchise has an immense roster of characters capable of leading the film. Looks like those wishes have been fulfilled as Cole hasn’t appeared at all in these trailers, suggesting he may be quietly killed off between movies or he fades off in the distance and is never mentioned again.
