The Spencer Gulf is set to receive a boost with the release of 100,000 baby Snapper as part of a $1.2 million restocking program.
The initiative is a crucial component of the $8.8 million Snapper support package announced last year due to depleted stocks in the Gulf St Vincent and Spencer Gulf/West Coast fishing zones.
Over the next two years, nearly one million baby Snappers, known as fingerlings, will be released in both gulfs.
The fingerlings, bred at the Aquatic Sciences Centre by the South Australian Research and Development Institute, will be marked with dyed purple ear bones for future identification.
The Snapper recovery efforts aim to restore a sustainable and thriving fishery while the fishing ban remains in effect until July 31, 2026 in the West Coast, Spencer Gulf, and Gulf St Vincent regions.
However, Snapper fishing in southeast waters is open with strict regulations in place.
