The Patient Assistance Transport Scheme (PATS) has expanded its support.
Rural and regional residents now qualify for financial aid when traveling to specialist Prosthetic and Orthotic clinics.
The move extends a 32-cent per kilometre rebate for those traveling over 100 kilometres each way to appointments.
This is a significant saving of up to $190 for a round trip from Port Augusta to Adelaide.
Over 45,000 kilometers of travel are expected to be subsidized in the first year alone.
To qualify, individuals must visit specific hospitals or clinics and use providers affiliated with the Australian Orthotic Prosthetic Association.
Eligibility and applications can be made through the PATS website or paper forms available at GP clinics.
PATS has five offices located in regional SA hospitals including Port Augusta, Whyalla and Port Lincoln.
