South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas says we have the opportunity to uplift the economy in the Upper Spencer Gulf and throughout the state.

He is set to visit the region at the end of the month for a three-day Major Economic Summit.

Starting in Whyalla on 25 February, then moving on to Port Augusta on 26 February, and Port Pirie on 27 February, everyone in the Upper Spencer Gulf is invited to attend.

Premier Malinauskas says locals deserve to hear the opportunities first – and face-to-face.

“Normally when there are State Economic Summits, they’re always in the city, he says.

“I see so much of the opportunity actually being in this part of our state, so rather than having an Economic Summit in Adelaide, we’ve decided to do it across the three Upper Spencer Gulf cities, and everyone around there is invited as well.”

Each event will start with a free community barbeque, followed by a public forum outlining the region’s potential to lead the world in renewable energy, green steel and copper production.

“We have a massive opportunity to dramatically uplift the economy, not just in the Spencer Gulf, but also throughout the state, by having a serious policy effort and a big investment from government to realise all the opportunities before us.

“What I’m talking about is a combination of renewable investment, the development of the Hydrogen Plant that we’re building in Whyalla… plus, actually looking at an even bigger commitment potentially, in building a facility to see BHP unlock all of the copper that we know exists around Olympic Dam, Oak Dam and Carrapateena.”
