Port Augusta Public Library is getting a bit brighter with the help of Melbourne artist Caroline Lejuene.

A mural is being painted on the building thanks to funding from the Benevolent Society to develop local children’s numeracy and literacy.

Port Augusta City Council hope the eye-catching mural will draw families and children into the space for learning.

The Council’s Community Development Officer Clementine Menz says the community got involved in the decision-making process.

“We received a lot of submissions nation-wide from artists who were really keen to be involved in this project, and we were really impressed with Caroline Lejuene’s design, Ms Menz says.

“She’s called her design ‘A Gateway to an Endless Universe of Stories and Imagination’… the public actually voted on her design overwhelmingly.”

In addition to being visually appealing, the mural comes with benefits for the community.

“It definitely promotes the library as a destination and it’s a wonderful addition to our already growing collection of colourful murals around the town.

“We’ll add it to our little mural trail and it’ll become, sort of, an iconic tourist destination… and there’s also some hidden nods to Port Augusta’s local characters that have been hidden in the mural.”
