Barunga West Council are appealing for increased state funding to improve boating facilities across regional South Australia.

Boat users already contribute to the maintenance of facilities through a levy paid during the registration process and through parking fees.

However, regional councils don’t see any of these funds.

CEO of Barunga West Council Maree Wauchope says they’ve called for money from the Marine Facilities Fund to go to regional councils, who can then invest it where it’s needed.

“Our boating facilities in our district are very very popular, we have a lot of people out fishing everyday, and we have a lot of visitors coming in and using our boating facilities now from metropolitan Adelaide, and so we want to see those facilities improved, Ms Wauchope says.

“Every boatie, they pay a registration fee, and we just want our fair share of that registration fee to reinvest into the facilities that boaties use.”

The proposal will be considered at a Local Government Association meeting on 24 May.
