Grain Producers SA is calling for the State Government to invest in the stretch of Upper Yorke Road between Arthurton and Kulpara – otherwise known as South Australia’s ‘Worst Grain Road’.

This call was prompted by a $600,000 investment into the stretch of Upper Yorke Road between Bute and Port Broughton for heavy patching works.

GPSA CEO Brad Perry says while the investment into that stretch of road is welcome, the stretch between Arthurton and Kulpara cannot continue to be ignored.

“Heavy vehicle operators are avoiding this stretch because of safety concerns and spending more time and money to go around it, Mr Perry says.

“Grain producers, heavy vehicle operators, residents, and tourists all need to use this road, but it’s sadly an accident waiting to happen without urgent upgrades.”

The RAA has rated the stretch of road a one out of five-star rating, and estimate $16 million will be needed to bring it to a three-star safety rating.
