HBO Max has officially announced a revival of the hit series Girls, nearly a decade after the original show concluded in 2017.

Who is Returning for the Five-Part Series?

The new limited series will run for five episodes, bringing back creator Lena Dunham alongside original co-stars Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, Zosia Mamet, and Andrew Rannells. However, one prominent name is missing from the announcement: Adam Driver. Driver played Hannah’s volatile boyfriend, and his absence follows Dunham’s recent memoir, which revealed on-set tensions that culminated in Driver allegedly throwing a chair at a wall.

Why Lena Dunham Decided to Bring ‘Girls’ Back

Taking to her Substack, Dunham explained that for a long time, returning to the show felt like sailing away from a massive glacier. Her perspective shifted when she turned 40. She noted that despite getting older, she still faces everyday hurdles, joking about ongoing challenges with her washing machine. “Maybe there was once a part of me that wanted to outrun Hannah and her ladies. Seeing the love you’ve so generously shared for it helped to turn me around,” she wrote.

What Happens Next?

With Dunham and original executive producer Judd Apatow returning behind the scenes, production is scheduled to begin in 2027. The original finale saw Hannah moving out of New York City to navigate new motherhood with Marnie by her side. Fans will soon find out exactly how those major life choices played out.
