Nominate your doctor for Rural Doctor of the Year

Rural and remote communities across Australia are being urged to recognise a great local doctor, by nominating them for the RDAA Rural Doctor of the Year Award 2021.

Time is running out, with nominations closing at midnight on Monday 12 July.

“For communities across Australia, the past twelve months have been like no other – and their local doctor and wider healthcare teams have been there to help them through it all” RDAA President, Dr John Hall, said.

“But it is not just during the COVID emergency that our rural doctors have gone above and beyond the call.

“Rural doctors and local health teams are the backbone of healthcare services in the bush.

“In hundreds of rural and remote towns, Rural Generalist doctors and rural GPs provide day-to-day care to their communities – not only through their general practices, but also at their local hospital.

“The services they provide cover an enormous range of fields, including preventive care, emergency care, obstetric care, anaesthetics, surgery, palliative care, geriatric care, paediatric care, advanced mental healthcare, Indigenous healthcare…and much more.

“Every day, rural doctors step up to help their patients and communities.

“Our annual Award aims to recognise a doctor who has gone above and beyond the call in serving their community, rural healthcare more broadly, or the profession of Rural Medicine.

“It recognises just some of the amazing rural doctors who have made a significant impact in their communities, whether it be over a short time or during their whole career.

“Many rural doctors have also devoted much of their free time to represent the rural health sector at the highest levels of political advocacy, to fight for better access to healthcare for rural patients and to keep rural hospitals open.

“We encourage rural Australians to nominate a dedicated rural doctor for this prestigious Award.

“While there can only be one recipient of the Award, all the doctors who are shortlisted as finalists will be recognised on our national website at and amongst their peers.

“For many rural doctors, just knowing they have been nominated is greatly appreciated by them.

“We look forward to receiving nominations for many deserving rural doctors in the weeks ahead.”

The recipient of the Award will be formally announced at the gala awards dinner of the Rural Medicine Australia 2021 conference, to be held in Perth in October.
