An Irish man allegedly tried to access the cockpit of a plane bound for Sydney from Los Angeles before assaulting a flight attendant.

Australian Federal Police arrested the 25-year-old as he got off the flight on October 10.

It's alleged he began behaving in a "disruptive manner" mid-flight after refusing to return to his seat when he approached the cockpit door.

He was eventually restrained after assaulting a flight attendant, the AFP said in a statement on Thursday.

The man, who lives in Australia on a temporary working visa, was charged with three offences and is due to face Downing Centre Local Court on Thursday.

"This alleged behaviour has no place in our aviation system and, while there was no significant delay or personal harm caused on this occasion, it should still serve as a warning to others," Detective Acting Superintendent Simone O'Mahony said in a statement.

"If you risk the safety of your fellow passengers, you risk facing significant penalties."
