The winners of the 72nd Children's Book of the Year Awards will be announced on Friday at the State Library of Queensland.
More than 400 entries in six different categories were whittled down to 36 titles the judges could choose from.
Hosted by The Children's Book Council of Australia, the prizes highlight the creativity and imagination of stories published for young Australians at a time when computers increasingly compete for their attention.
"Young people will always need well-crafted stories and information books to help them understand themselves and other people and navigate the world around them," the CBCA chair, Professor Margot Hillel, said in a statement.
The awards mark the start of CBCA Book Week, which is August 18-24.
