A Melbourne man plans to spend his million-dollar lottery winnings on buying a new home to make room for his three orphaned grandchildren.

The Heidelberg grandfather was "flabbergasted" after taking out the $1 million division-one prize in Monday night's TattsLotto draw, and said the unexpected cash would go a long way to caring for his late son's kids.

"I'm the grandfather of three orphans. I really need this money for them as we need to move into a bigger home," the anonymous man said in a statement on Tuesday.
