Free Greens Disposal Day in Pirie

clean up 2

Fire Danger Season is fast approaching; Port Pirie Regional Council’s last Free Greens Disposal Day is this Sunday.

Residents will have the opportunity to get their homes and properties ready by clearing their yards of any excess green waste.

The Port Pirie Waste Transfer Station will be open between 10am – 2pm and the Crystal Brook Waste Transfer Station will be open between 2.30 – 5.30pm, with multiple loads accepted at both sites.

Council have said, “Please be aware this does not include noxious weeds such as Caltrop, boxthorn and three corner jacks and these weeds must be placed into a bag and disposed in your red general waste bin.”

According to Council, Residents are required under the Fire and Emergency Services Act 2005to take reasonable steps to reduce the spread of fire throughout their land and to protect assets, so Council has implemented these free disposal days as an opportunity for residents to do so at no cost.

Fire danger season property preparedness tips:

  • Slash or mow undergrowth (grasses and weeds) within 20 meters of dwellings and other structures and fire breaks around the property’s boundaries.
  • Clear gutters of accumulated leaf litter.
  • Trim or modify vegetation to ensure clearance of structures, not up against walls or overhanging, remove ladder fuels (between knee to eye) to keep fire on the ground.
  • Remove other accumulated dead vegetation (fallen leaves, bark etc.) from around assets.

For further advice on fire prevention or to arrange a site visit, please contact Council’s Fire Prevention Officer on 8633 9736.
