A Port Pirie man will face court after he was detected drink driving at Port Augusta West.

Far North patrols stopped a Ford Laser on the Eyre Highway for the purpose of driver testing.

As police approached the vehicle, they observed seven occupants inside the sedan with a 4-year-old boy lying on the parcel shelf in the back window, while a 1-year-old girl was found lying in the foot well behind the driver's seat at the feet of a rear passenger.

The driver was breath tested and returned an alleged blood alcohol reading of 0.224 which is more than four times the legal limit.

Further enquiries revealed the driver was unlicensed.  The 31-year-old man was reported for drink driving, drive unlicensed and failing to ensure two passengers under 16 years were correctly restrained.

The Ford was impounded for a period of 28 days and the driver was further disqualified from driving and obtaining a driver’s licence for a period of 12 months.
