Trafigura Could Restart the Sinter Plant

Port Pirie Nyrstar

The much talked about lead smelter in Port Pirie could restart the sinter plant in coming weeks because of other disruptions.

The smelter had an unplanned closure earlier this year when the blast furnace had a steam eruption and the TSL furnace had a gas duct failure.

The plant reopened in July, however the TSL was damaged again causing the current situation

Nyrstar says repairs to the furnace will take a number of weeks and restarting the sinter plant is only one option being explored.

The smelters new owners Trafigura is reportedly hoping to restart the sinter plant which will in turn restart production.

There are some concerns with restarting the plant including the lead-in-air levels but Member for Frome Geoff Brock told the ABC nobody’s been poisoned by lead.

Trafigura will need approval from the Environmental Protection Agency before they can restart the plant.
