The Marshall Liberal Government has thrown out South Australia’s $20 million Marine Scalefish fishing licence buy back, merely days before it was meant to start.
The structural reform package was a previous Labor government initiative which was put in place to ensure snapper, whiting and garfish stocks would increase over time.
This comes almost simultaneously with the new figures from the South Australian Research and Development Institute which shows a 90% depletion of snapper numbers since 2014.
The buyback scheme would have removed 100 commercial nets and longling licences had it began July 1.
Shadow Minister for Primary Industries and Regional Development Eddie Hughes says there was no consultation surrounding the buyback being dropped.
SA Labor are calling on the Liberal Government to reverse the decision and help replenish the marine life.
