Roadworks Concerns Heard

Whyalla City Council has welcomed significant feedback on the spray seal process being used in this year’s roadworks program. The process has raised concerns from locals about loose stones on roads.

Council CEO Chris Cowley said to alleviate the issue of loose stones, for spray sealed roads, Council allows a couple of weeks for the road to settle and then sweeps the loose gravel to remove it.

He said “There may be some issues on the roads in the two weeks before they are swept but once the loose gravel has been removed these are very good, serviceable roads and we also do secondary sweeps.”

In the draft plan and budget, Council is proposing a combination of spray seal and asphalt hot mix in a $14m road program over the next three years.

The spray seal process is seven times cheaper than hot mix, the combination of the two processes is being suggested by Council to allow more roads to be upgraded.
