A Police officer in Whyalla has come under fire on social media after taking seven shots to put down an injured kangaroo at a Whyalla High School.
SA Police says the officer was called to Stuart High School in Whyalla on Wednesday after being contacted by a wildlife rescue group reporting that a kangaroo had a broken leg.
In footage posted to social media the police officer was seen taking several shots at a kangaroo a few metres away in order to put it down.
SA Police confirmed a number of attempts were made by the officer to destroy the kangaroo, but some animals could be more resilient than others.
SAPOL says officers have the authority to kill animals if they are injured and that a final assessment has yet be completed on the incident.
