Port Augusta Hospital staff shortages worsens

hospital generic.jpgThe increase of inmates at the Port Augusta prison is pulling doctors away from the local hospital.
A $57.2 million prison expansion started last year, aiming to increase the number of in mates, but the health system has never been ready to accommodate the boost.
The flowover effect means that prisoners now have to be treated by local GPs in the hospital, as opposed to a service at the prison, and their workloads have sky rocketed.
It’s now gotten to the point that the Port Augusta health Advisory Council has told an inquiry into the shortage, that if push comes to shove, Gp’s will not be able to fill emergency department rosters.
This announcement comes less than a month after the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation- said that staff shortages were compromising patient care in regional SA hospitals.

The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Federation (ANMF) SA Branch, have said that staff shortages at major regional hospitals such as; Whyalla, Port Augusta, Port Pirie and Mount Gambier hospitals, has given nurses no choice but to stop admitting some people to hospital beds.
