Swimming great Michael Phelps has dropped out of the 200-metre fresstyle at the US Olympic trials.

Michael Phelps is dropping the 200-metre freestyle at the US swimming trials, leaving the 18-time Olympic gold medallist with four events.

Phelps, 30, said on Sunday he wouldn't compete in the 200 free preliminaries on Monday (Tuesday AEST).

He didn't swim Sunday on the opening night of the eight-day meet that determines the US team for the Rio Olympics.
