Man charged for starting fire in NSW

A 32-year-old man is to face court charged with intentionally causing a fire and other offences in the Lake Macquarie area of NSW's Hunter region.

It is alleged he stole a white Ford Falcon ute around 8.15pm on Friday which was later spotted driving dangerously towards Buchanan, north west of Newcastle. Police attempted to stop it after it had allegedly hit another car.

The driver failed to stop and the car was later located well alight on a property in Buchanan. Rural Fire Service officers extinguished the blaze, as well as a small grass fire metres from bushland.

A man was arrested nearby and was taken to Maitland Hospital for leg injuries. Upon release he was charged with multiple offences, including take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, damage property by fire, intentionally cause fire and be reckless as to its spread and steal motor vehicle.

He was refused bail to appear at Newcastle Local Court on Saturday.
