A man is being sought by police after he allegedly falsely reported that a swimmer had gone missing off the NSW south coast, prompting a large-scale search operation.
Emergency services began looking for the man on Wednesday evening after they were told he had gone for a run followed by a swim at the isolated Gillards Beach in the Mimosa Rocks National Park, near Tathra.
The alarm was raised by a man who said he was the missing swimmer's twin brother and had found his belongings on the beach.
The search, which involved the marine command, SES, paramedics, Surf Rescue NSW and PolAir, continued until Friday but was called off when authorities realised it was a hoax.
"Inquiries determined the report was false, and there was no missing swimmer," NSW Police said in a statement on Saturday.
Officers are now investigating and want to speak to a 42-year-old about "making false representations to police".
