Homemade gun leads to tragic death in Tas

A Tasmanian man is dead after he accidentally shot himself in the chest with an unstable, homemade firearm.

The body of Timmothy Matthew Gardiner, 29, was found at a Blyth Street home at Ravenswood on Saturday morning.

"Police have been able to determine that Tim was in possession of a small homemade firearm at a residence nearby the unit where he was located at the time of his death," Detective Inspector Kim Steven said.

He was "handling" the homemade firearm when it suddenly discharged, firing into his chest and he was able to make it to his mother's home, where he died, police said.

"We are satisfied that Tim's death was a tragic accident," the detective inspector said.

Three men were at the house when the gun went off, and were spoken to by officers.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
