Man charged after fatal M4 crash in Sydney

A man is due to face court in Sydney on charges of negligent and dangerous driving causing death after a fatal crash which left 200 metres of the M4 sprawled with debris.

Irish tradesman Francis Shanley, 36, was killed in the pile-up involving at least eight cars and a truck at the Church Street off-ramp in Mays Hill before 6am on Thursday.

Police arrested a 53-year-old man on Friday night and charged him with dangerous driving occasioning death, negligent driving occasioning death, fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death and two counts of causing bodily harm by misconduct.

The Ropes Crossing man was allegedly driving a Toyota Echo that changed lanes on the motorway and then stopped, causing multiple collisions as a result.

He was refused bail and is due to face Parramatta Bail Court on Saturday.
