A man has been charged with intent to murder after allegedly setting his own unit on fire in Sydney's east.
Emergency services were called to a blaze at a ground-floor unit in Maroubra on Sunday about 5.45pm, with nearby residents having to be evacuated.
A crime scene was established at the unit after an unregistered firearm was allegedly found.
Police arrested a 30-year-old man nearby an hour later and he was taken to hospital with minor injuries before being charged with destroying or damaging a building by fire with intent to murder and firearm charges.
The man was refused bail to appear in Waverley Local Court on Monday.
