Whyalla City Council’s Civic Building operations will shift to the former Edward John Eyre High School site by early November this year, as engineering inspections revealed the current building’s limited lifespan due to water damage.
Mayor Phill Stone stated that while there are no immediate safety concerns, investing in a building at its end of life isn’t justifiable.
It would cost $4.5 million to address the issues and $1 million annually for maintenance.
The council will engage the community to decide between alternatives like rebuilding in the current location, permanent relocation, or an alternate site.
Community safety and cost-effectiveness are key considerations.
