CARLTON has used the first pick at the 2018 AFL Draft to select star Geelong Falcons midfielder Sam Walsh.
The Blues decided to go with Walsh ahead of talented South Australian forward Jack Lukosius, who was snapped up with pick No.2 by Gold Coast.
“It’s pretty amazing really, and its just so exciting to be part of the Carlton Football Club,” Walsh said moments after being revealed as the first selection.
It caps a stunning 2018 for Walsh, who won the Larke Medal as the best player at the under-18 National Championships, claimed the Geelong Falcons best-and-fairest despite playing only 12 of a possible 18 games, and was a member of the TAC Cup Team of the Year.
He becomes the third No.1 pick from the Geelong Falcons, following in the footsteps of Luke Hodge (2001) and Patrick McCartin (2014).
