The Seven Sperm Whales that were found beached at Ardrossan have left the Yorke Peninsula sad for their death and stumped for the cause.
Experts have made speculations that perhaps one of the whales was in distress and called for others to come and assist but all becoming stranded, others say the group came in to feed but left it too late to escape with the tide.
Initially six were found dead on the beach by locals, a seventh whale was floating near the jetty. The much more fortunate eighth whale was found in distress in shallow waters near Port Vincent but thanks to rescuers was ushered back to sea.
Sperm Whales are the largest of the toothed whales and can be up to 18m long and live up to 70 years.
